So Close, And Yet So Far

To say that Barack Obama's victory in yesterday's election was momentous is such an understatement. He has proven that America has come so far in such a relatively short time, that truly anyone can bring about change. And yet, as I write this, the same Californians who knocked down the wall between white and black have built an even bigger, uglier one with the passage of Proposition 8.

Prop. 8 is quite simply an exercise in hatred. It was never about allowing same-sex couples to marry, but always about segregating that section of the population based on archaic religious beliefs that have no place in government or the constitutional rights of the people. Since they can't all be confined to concentration camps (like we did with the Japanese), let's hold 'em down in any way we can. It's embarrassing and shameful, and I apologize to all the gay and lesbian people who happen to come across this blog.

  1. With the hateful passing of prop 8 (and I am not gay and I don't live in CA) I can only foresee what is next - The people of California will now look into each and everyone's personal lives and let them know if they approve or not. The people of the state will vote on who you are allowed to marry or date. The people will vote on what they think is best for you, after all, just like the gay community, you have a choice in how you choose to live, don't you? Jeannie, from now on you are gay. No more men! It's your choice, at least the state you live in thinks so - so find yourself a "hottie" and change sides! If you don't do it soon, Californian's may choose for you.

  2. I voted yes on 8 and I don't hate a soul, yet I come across your blog and feel your hate instantly....hum?

  3. Anonymous, I'm sorry you feel hate here because there is none implied. Disgust, yes, and frustration, definitely, but no hate. I can't honestly say that I hate anyone. I do hate discrimination, though, and intolerance.

Proposition 8 was devised to discriminate against a specific portion of the population. How is that not hateful?

  4. There is an interesting video out there...funny, but then again not. They took all the point to vote "for" prop 8 and applied them to divorce! It was awesome. Supporters of prop 8 stated that it would destroy the family life - so does divorce! They said without a "mom and dad" kids couldn't be "normal"...just like divorce - there was so much more, but in essence, if we are to outlaw gay marriage, then for the exact same reasons, we need to outlaw divorce! So Californians, choose carefully who you marry!

  5. Prop 8 was devised to support the word of God. He doesn't hate anyone but He does expect us to follow his word, just as you expect your boys to respect your word. Your boys may not like your rules but you still expect your wishes to be followed. Your rules do not come filled with hate and neither do the Lord's rules. You can't change the word of God because it doesn't meet your agenda. This is, after all, "One nation under God," Not "...under God," only if it suits us.

  6. Remember, "under God" wasn't added to the Pledge of Allegiance until 1956 - prior to that, we were just "one nation" with no reference to religion.

Our founding fathers thought it necessary to warn against too close a relationship between church and state - I'm guessing this kind of thing is why.

No one wants to change the word of God. God just shouldn't have anything to do with the Constitution.

  7. The less and less we include Him the more and more our society plunges. You can't decide where and when to include Him.

  8. But we can - that's why we call this a Democratic Society. As "free" Americans, we're entitled to worship the way we want to, think the way we want to, and live with whomever we want to, provided we remain within the structure of the laws that govern us.

Maybe it's not the selective exclusion of God that has screwed everything up. Maybe it's the increasingly large gray area that comes from selectively blending laws and religion, leaving no clear path for us to follow.
